Abstract

The paper highlights the epistemology of exploitation theory as a foundation for measuring both the system and product of Islamic and conventional banks—is exploitation possible to be found in Islamic and conventional banks? The study uses both the library studies to explore the maqashid shariah concept and its relation to exploitation theory. On the other hand, the study employs a survey approach to empirically assess the exploitation levels of both Islamic and conventional banks in Indonesia. Additionally, the research is formulated to theoretically explore the concept of exploitation from various traditions in social and Islamic sciences. Thus, the study also attempts to compare the quality of exploitation of Islamic and conventional banks in Indonesia. As a result, the paper identified that the exploitation index of Islamic banks is a lower index than that of traditional banks, with a score of 3.65. On the other hand, the conventional bank is 17.30 points. It means that the more commitment a bank has to avoid mafsadat—riba, the lower the exploitation index is, and vice versa.
